A changeling is a fairy baby that's switched with a human one at birth.
Changelings are fairies who were sent to the First World as infants, where they are swapped out with human children and subsequently raised as humans themselves. The human parents of changelings are usually unaware of the magical nature of their children.
History[]
The practice of making changelings is considered barbaric in the Otherworld and it rarely occurs in modern times.[1] Sixteen years before Bloom Peters' arrival at Alfea, she was born to unidentified fairy parents, but was kidnapped by the Blood Witches of Aster Dell because she possessed the legendary Dragon Flame.[2] The fairy Rosalind was able to rescue the infant girl after she aided in the destruction of Aster Dell. Rosalind implanted a vision within the girl's mind that would activate once she was old enough, instructing her to come and find her.[3]
To keep the girl safe, Rosalind took her to the First World and left her in the care of Mike and Vanessa Peters, whose own biological daughter died shortly after birth from a heart defect. However, the Peters were unaware of this as Rosalind made the switch without their knowledge. In doing so, Rosalind made the baby girl a changeling. Mike and Vanessa the changeling gained the name of Bloom from the deceased daughter and was raised by the Peter’s for sixteen years in Gardenia as their own daughter.
Farah Dowling discovered Bloom in the First World after her powers as a fire fairy manifested. She invited Bloom to study at Alfea College in order to learn how to control her magic. Although Farah knew that Bloom was a changeling, she told her she was descended from a dormant fairy bloodline in hopes of sparing Bloom from the anguish that would result from knowing her changeling nature. However, Bloom's roommate Aisha was able to deduce that she was a changeling after Bloom told her she survived a heart defect in the womb, and from the extraordinary amount of power Bloom wielded in the forest that wouldn't be possible for someone from a dormant bloodline.[1]
After learning about her past from Rosalind, Bloom returned to Gardenia in order to tell Mike and Vanessa that she was a fairy.[2]

- Changelings were not present in the original Winx Club
series, but the concept was adapted from European folklore. - In the novel The Fairies' Path, Beatrix tells Dane a changeling was responsible for the Great Fire of London. This dialogue is absent from the final cut of the episode the novel was partially adapted from. In addition, the veracity of the statement is unclear, as Riven states that Beatrix was feeding Dane "changeling garbage". Beatrix, however, claims that changelings are dangerous nonetheless.
